This month’s National Renaissance Staffulty of the Month is MSG (Ret.) Marlon Green from Lakewood High School in Salemburg, NC. Nominator Jennifer Naylor describes how his efforts have supported Renaissance and PBIS initiatives in their school (lightly edited):
“MSG (R) Green goes above and beyond every day for our students. Just in two years, he has totally transformed (along with others, he leads by example) our school’s culture. He gives Saturday’s to hold school car washes to raise money for student incentive gifts. He works during his planning period to make lunch a fun, engaging, family environment, running PBIS Thursday’s, games and incentives.
LHS partnered with Jostens to rebrand the school’s logo. MSG (R) Green is fully bought in to the concept of marketing the brand, improving school pride, and energizing the hallways with pride and high expectations. At Lakewood, we #repthelep, rewarding students that proudly display their new logo in the community, with a Vinnys (local pizza business) pizza every Friday at lunch.
He also started and resumes Spotlight Student of the Week (several per grade level), Support Staff of the Month, Teacher of the Month recognitions.
Lakewood is proud to say that we are now a “B” school, meetings growth in test scores, jumping from last in ranking for traditional high schools, to 2nd within 4 years. There is no doubt that Renaissance, PBIS, and culture-building played a big part in the success.
We know that ‘it starts with you,’ and making Lakewood a better place starts with people like him.“
What’s a favorite Renaissance moment for you?
My favorite Renaissance moment was last year at our end of year celebration. We recognized 248 students for no disciplinary incidents the entire school year. We had 268 students enrolled last year.
How has Renaissance impacted your school’s culture?
Renaissance has added to the positive culture we strive for at Lakewood. It has helped us to recognize, reward and nurture our young leopards.
How has Renaissance affected you personally?
I have always given 100% to my job. Renaissance provides the support and encouragement schools need to succeed. This makes me want to work even harder for my school.
What advice would you give to someone just starting with Renaissance?
Try it! Don’t knock it until you try it. The system works and your school will benefit.
MSG (R) Green will receive a shirt and a lapel pin, and was entered into a drawing for free registration to this year’s Jostens Renaissance National Conference.
